How to Shrink the Margins of a PDF for the County Recorder

Updated: Apr 5

How to Shrink the Margins of a PDF for the County Recorder:

If you have had occasion to record something, you might be aware that most county recorders include additional charges if the text of the document goes into the margins. For example, in Clark County, Nevada the Recorder requires:

  1. First Page Margins: A document should have a margin of 1 inch on the left and right sides and at the bottom of each page, and must have a space of 3 X 3 inches at the upper right corner of the first page.

  2. Multiple Page Margins: The first page must have the margins listed above. All succeeding pages should have a margin of 1 inch on the left and right sides, and at the top and bottom of each page. (NRS 247.110)

This can be a challenge when recording something like a court pleading which normally has text in the margins. The most efficient way we have found to shrink the margins on a PDF is as follows:

  1. Print to PDF with paper size set to 11×14

  2. Print the 11×14 version to PDF again, now at size 8.5×11

The software shrinks the 11×14 to fit on smaller paper, which increases the margins. Sample of the results:
